For 75 years, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas has played an active role in helping Kansans lead healthier lives. Those efforts continue today through National Walk @ Lunch Day®. The day is designed to encourage people to take a walk during their lunch break – or another time during the day – to start a healthy routine.
This year on April 26, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas is sponsoring walking events in 13 Kansas communities; all walks begin at noon. BCBSKS-led walks will take place in Dodge City, El Dorado, Emporia, Garden City, Hays, Hutchinson, Independence, Lawrence, Manhattan, Pittsburg, Salina, Topeka and Wichita.
"National Walk @ Lunch Day serves as a great reminder to Kansans that a regular walking program offers many health benefits, and is easy to do once you make time on your schedule," said Andrew C. Corbin, president/CEO. "We know that people are busy, but finding 30 minutes a day for a brisk walk has health benefits that make one's efforts worthwhile."
A regular walking program, Corbin said, can have a positive influence on heart disease, type-2 diabetes and osteoporosis, while also reducing stress, improving muscle tone and controlling weight.
"Throughout our 75-year history as a Kansas-based company, we've always had a strong interest in helping not only our members, but all Kansans, lead healthier lives. That is part of our role as the state's largest health insurer but, more importantly, it is what we do because helping Kansans live longer, healthier lives is the right thing for us to do," Corbin said. "I encourage businesses and individuals across Kansas to celebrate National Walk @ Lunch Day by joining in one of our 13 walks or planning one of their own. Let's get moving April 26, then let's make it a habit!"
All BCBSKS-led National Walk @ Lunch Day events will happen rain or shine, and will begin at noon April 26 with a short rally followed by a 30-minute walk. A limited number of free T-shirts are available for participants at each location. Events will take place in:
Printable promotional materials for each location – such as flyers, posters, postcards and email templates – are available on our website. Businesses, schools, hospitals or other organizations that would like to plan their own walks April 26 can find customizable promotional pieces here. The first 75 such organizations outside of the 13 official walk locations that register their walk information with Blue Cross can receive up to 20 free exercise towels to use as giveaways.
