Questions About Medicare Advantage
What is the difference between Medicare Advantage and a Medicare Supplement?
In a Medicare Advantage policy, you are agreeing to receive all of your Medicare services through Medicare Advantage. This means you must go through your Medicare Advantage's network of providers to receive the benefits covered by Medicare. With a Medicare Supplement, you are free to choose which physicians you want to receive your Medicare-covered services.
What if I am leaving a Medicare Advantage coverage area?
You have 63 days from the time you lose your Medicare Advantage policy to enroll in a plan from BCBSKS and be guaranteed coverage without completing a health statement. Otherwise you will need to complete a health statement. Your application will be forwarded to our underwriting department. They will determine your eligibility. You will receive a letter stating whether you were accepted and what your effective date is. If you are denied, you will be given the reason(s) why. Please contact our Plan 65 Sales in Topeka at 785-291-4301 or toll free at 1-800-752-6650. To apply online, visit bcbsks.com/medicare.
What if I am on a Medicare Advantage policy and want to switch to Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas?
If you joined a Medicare Advantage plan when you were first eligible for Medicare Part A at age 65 and within the first year of joining and want to switch to original Medicare, you can switch to any supplement policy that is offered in your area.
If you dropped a Medicare Supplement policy to join a Medicare Advantage Plan for the first time you have been in the plan less than a year and you want to switch back, you are able to switch back to the policy you previously had.
If you are over 65, past six months from your Medicare Part B effective date or past your 12-month trial period, you will have to complete a health statement. Your application will be forwarded to our underwriting department. They will determine your eligibility. You will receive a letter stating whether you were accepted and what your effective date is.
